AQUINO, ROXAS RUN-AWAY WINNERS IN UST POLLS

 

Two different surveys conducted among students of the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila showed Liberal Party standard-bearers Senators Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas as top choices of students if the presidential and vice presidential elections were held today.  

In a survey conducted by the Varsitarian, the official student newspaper in UST, among 472 students randomly picked from January 18 to February 8, 36.4% chose Aquino as the candidate they will vote for President while 40.9% chose Roxas as their candidate for Vice-President if elections were to be held today.

In another survey called Political Opinion of the Youth Survey conducted by the Research Cluster for Culture, Education and Social Issues from December 14 to 18 last year among 2,147 respondents, 34.7% chose Aquino as the candidate they will vote for President. The research cluster used a “close-ended” method where its chose from a list based on the Commission on Elections’ official roster of candidates.  

Roxas, on the other hand, was the top choice of 46.3% of the students who participated in the youth survey of the research cluster. 

Administration candidate Gilbert Teodoro placed second with a rating of 33.5% in the youth survey and 31.4% in the Varsitarian survey while Nacionalista bet Manuel Villar was in third place with only 10.3% in the youth survey and was in fourth spot in the Varsitarian survey with 9.3%.  

The results of the youth survey on the other presidential bets are as follows: Richard Gordon – 7.7%; Eddie Villanueva – 1.7%; Joseph Estrada – 1.5%; Nicanor Perlas – 0.7%; JC delos Reyes – 0.2% and Jamby Madrigal – 0.1%.

The Varsitarian poll showed Estrada and Villanueva with 0.9% and Madrigal with 0.4%. Delos Reyes got zero votes.

In the vice presidential race survey, Roxas was way ahead of his rivals. None of the other candidates came close to his 46.3% rating in the youth survey and 40.9% rating in the Varsitarian survey.

In the youth survey, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay was in second place with a rating of 18.3%; followed by former MMDA chief Bayani Fernando who had a rating of 14.4%. In the Varsitarian poll, however, Binay and Fernando switched rankings, with Binay landing the third spot with 19.1% and Fernando,

The other vice presidential candidates placed the same in both the youth and Varsitarian surveys: Loren Legarda with 9.4% (youth survey) and 7.2% (Varsitarian), Edu Manzano (2.2% and 1.5%, respectively), Perfecto Yasay (0.3% and 0.4%), Jay Sonza (0.2% on both surveys), and Dominador Chipeco (0.1% and 0.2%).
